This chapter is a compact history lesson that doubles as a design guide: most “new” kernels repeat the same architectural problems that early systems already encountered.

Practical notes for your own kernel

  • Choose a topology structure that makes local neighbourhood queries O(1) or close.
  • Plan for non-manifold as a deliberate design decision: either ban it strictly, or support it explicitly—half-support leads to fragile code.
  • Bake in verification tools from day 1:

    • geometry/topology coherence checks (e.g., edge curve endpoints vs. vertex positions within tolerance)

Historical lessons that still apply
